Report: High-end TVS, smartphones drive a surge in demand for AMOLED panels in 2021

Strong sales of high-end OLED TVS coupled with a rebound in smartphone sales drove a sharp increase in demand for AMOLED display panels last year, according to a new report by Omdia, Taiwan Economic Daily reported.The total area of panel demand reached 14.2 million square meters, an increase of 52 percent compared with 2020.IT Home has learned that Omdia’s latest report indicates that AMOLED display panel demand will continue to grow strongly in 2022, albeit at a lower level than in 2021, before settling into a more stable demand pattern in the following years.The company expects global demand for AMOLED display panels by area to grow at an 11.6% CAGR (compound annual growth rate) from 2021 to 2028.According to Omdia analysts, AMOLED has successfully entered the smartphone market and its market share is expected to exceed 35 percent in 2021. Most smartphone brands have adopted AMOLED panels in high-end models, and recently have also started aggressively launching foldable smartphones, the report said.In addition, Omdia expects OLED TV panel demand to grow 63% year-on-year in 2021.OLED demand in the TV market, based on area, will surpass smartphone demand for the first time in 2021.
